Coffee call this morning about choosing a niche
Had an amazing conversation with @Barry Murray this morning during our Coffee Hour. One topic kept coming back. Should you niche down or not? We're both creatives with years of experience across different disciplines. And still, that question is not easy to answer. There are obvious advantages. You become the go-to person. People find you faster. Your message is clearer. But there's a flip side. You love doing different things. You're good at different things. Picking one feels like leaving the rest behind. No right answer here. But I'm curious where you stand. Have you niched down? Why did you? Or why not? Drop it below. 👇

Hi @Jamy Vodegel . Many thanks for the catch-up- it was a great conversation. Regarding niche marketing for freelance or contract designers. The few Creative business coaches that I've observed often recommend doubling down on a specific industry to generate leads, create targeted content, and stand out in a crowded market - really becoming the thought leader within that niche market. While reverse-engineering a niche based on industry budgets and activity makes business sense, it can be incredibly difficult for creatives. Many of us became designers to challenge ourselves creatively and solve diverse problems across different sectors. Being forced into a single category can feel limiting, whereas having a variety of clients provides the creative fulfilment we seek. Also, if you're going to invest 5-10 years building up this niche, it better be a really good industry to keep you turning up every day.
