I'm building one Gen Effect node every day in September, need your input
I've been poking at the Gen Effect node, and I've only scratched the surface. But I've seen enough to know there's something real here, and I want to actually understand it instead of leaving it at surface level. So here's the plan. Starting September 1st, I'm building one Gen Effect node every single day. 31 days, 31 effects. By the end I want a real library, and I want to have gone from scratching the surface to knowing this node inside out. 📅 Every week I'll drop what I built and what I learned. Four posts across the month, each one a real breakdown, not a highlight reel. Quick version of what it does, for anyone who hasn't touched it. You describe a visual effect in language and the node builds it. Not an image that regenerates every time, but an actual effect with its own panel of sliders. That glass metaball on my text is one of these. The part that made me want to go deeper: there are two layers. Generating the effect is a creative gamble and can come out different every time. But once it exists, running it is completely predictable. Same slider, same result. So you don't chase a perfect generation, you lock one good one and reuse it. Deterministic and repeatable. From what I've seen you can keep these dead simple or push them into something genuinely advanced, and I want to find out how far that goes. 👇 Here's where you come in. If you've got an effect you'd actually use or have seen somewhere, drop it below. I'll spend my credits and my time building the ones that come from this community. You get the effect, I get to learn the node against real briefs instead of my own guesses. September 1st we start.

Weave can now turn a photo into a 3D world you can walk through
World Labs' Marble is now a node in Weave. It turns text, an image, or a video into a full 3D world you can actually move through. Not a flat render. A space. You direct the camera, pick your angles, and pull the exact shot you want out of it. I haven't run it myself yet, but the implications are obvious. This is scene direction, not generation. You stop hoping for a good angle and start choosing one. Haven't touched it, so I'm genuinely asking: where would this fit in your workflow? What's the first thing you'd build with it?

@Zach McDuffie curious how you would use this new Node. I have the idea this thing is very helpful if you're into worldbuilding for stories and games.

@Zach McDuffie That's a sick production! The movie is very consistent with the characters and props. In the real world, most of the effort goes into pre-production. Now, with AI, it's creating all the references and locking them. You created the story yourself?
Coffee call this morning about choosing a niche
Had an amazing conversation with @Barry Murray this morning during our Coffee Hour. One topic kept coming back. Should you niche down or not? We're both creatives with years of experience across different disciplines. And still, that question is not easy to answer. There are obvious advantages. You become the go-to person. People find you faster. Your message is clearer. But there's a flip side. You love doing different things. You're good at different things. Picking one feels like leaving the rest behind. No right answer here. But I'm curious where you stand. Have you niched down? Why did you? Or why not? Drop it below. 👇

My honest answer? I struggle with it too. It's easy to say yes to work that comes your way. And I've worked hard enough to have the luxury of saying no right now. So that's my intention for this year. Say no more often. Because there's plenty of work out there. Making money is great. But to keep going, you need to stay close to what drives you. That only happens with clients you actually enjoy working for. Those are the ones where you go the extra mile. Not just for the money but for the creative satisfaction. And you build real relationships along the way. That's what I'm going for this year anyway.

Thanks @Barry Murray, really valuable perspective and I appreciate you taking the time to lay it out like this. You put your finger on exactly why the standard advice feels off to a lot of creatives. Most of us didn't get into this to serve one sector for ten years. The variety is the fulfilment (most of the time). One thing I'd add: a niche doesn't have to be a market. It can be the thing you do, not just who you do it for. I used to build websites, shoot photography, run a webshop. At some point I made choices about what I actually wanted to be known for, and that narrowing was a discipline choice, not an industry one. So it's about the lighthouse do you want to be, and how far do you want that light to reach? You can stand in one spot and still shine across a lot of water.
Back from holiday. Let's bring back the coffee calls.
I'm back, rested, and I want to start the coffee moments again. Live calls, no agenda, just talking Weave and AI with whoever shows up. Problem: I have no idea where you all are in the world, so I can't pick a time yet. So first things first. Where are you based?

Tomorrow coffee hour, who will be there?
I got early access to a new Weave node. That's all I can tell you.
In between packing bags, I've got something to share. There's a new node coming to Weave, and probably way more, but that's for later. I've had my hands on it. It's good. It changes how you'd approach a certain part of your workflow, and once you've used it, you don't really want to go back to the old way. That's genuinely all I can say. I was asked not to share details, and I'm going to respect that (but I think the screen captures gives a pretty decent hint :). But when the embargo lifts, this group gets my breakdown first. Consider this a heads up. Something's coming.

Did anyone get his hands on this? I'm just figuring out how I can incorporate this for client work. I've seen some nice examples though, especially in the vfx area.
