Where are you in your children’s book journey right now?
Let’s make today’s community stronger by learning about one another. 👇 In the comments, tell us ONE of these: 1. Your writing stage (idea / first draft / editing / stuck) 2. Your biggest win so far 3. One thing slowing you down right now Example: “I’m drafting chapter 2 and feeling excited but stuck on character voices.” No need to be perfect. Just share what’s real for you today.

@Zack Bush Thanks Zack - what a warm, friendly message. It's great to see other's stories here and the messages of the day are a great reminder that we're all working towards something personal. I actually never considered a children's book before. I just didn't have it in me to see beyond ABC. But as I started to write, I realized how it feels to create something so wholesome -- to wonder what a child might feel when they opened the book or see the images. It's been way more fun than I expected. Also working with a series -- it might be from my TV days producing, but it feels more episodic and a challenge to outdo myself and connect them.

@Zack Bush thank you for saying that.
And the Illustrations Begin!
I met with an illustrator yesterday! We are moving forward with the development of the main character to see if we can capture my vision and the mood of the book. It is actually happening!

How exciting! I think it’s much easier to write with heart when you can see your main characters — just feels real - like they are alive.
Most people never write their children’s book because of this
They think the story comes first. It doesn’t. Clarity comes first. Here’s the truth I’ve learned after writing 65+ children’s books and selling over a million copies: Great children’s books are built on one clear promise, not a clever plot. Before you write a single word, answer this in one sentence: “When a child finishes this book, they should feel __________.” Examples Braver More loved Less afraid of bedtime Proud of who they are Excited to learn If you can’t finish that sentence, the book will stall. Every time. Today’s 5 minute exercise Comment with your sentence. Do not overthink it. One feeling. One outcome. I’ll reply and help you sharpen it into a book worthy idea.

This is thoughtful - I design a lot of pitch decks for movie producer and they send me all this content, storybeats, characters, etc. And I always find the best decks answer one question -- what is the universal truth in this film that we can all relate to. Then I work backwards. :) I didn't even realize I was doing that with my children's book -- until I read this. Thanks Zack!
The real reason most children’s books never get written
Most people don’t fail at writing a children’s book because they lack talent. They fail because they wait for confidence before they start. Confidence does not come first. Clarity does. When you know who your reader is, what problem your story solves, and why it matters to that child, the writing gets easier. Not perfect. Easier. Here is a quick exercise I want you to try today. No overthinking. 1. Who is your book for? Be specific about age and emotional need. 2. What feeling do you want that child to have when the book ends? 3. What is one moment from your own life that connects to that feeling? That is your story seed. You do not need a full plot today. You do not need rhymes today. You do not need illustrations today. You just need the seed. Drop your answers in the comments if you want feedback. This is how real books actually begin.

6-10 I want children to have confidence in the kitchen and I want to instill in them the lessons to keep them safe. I also want them to see how making food or gifting something handmade is meaning (and what recipes mean to people). This stems from my own life, growing up as an only child. I realized much later that some kids don’t get kitchen safety lessons - my own husband leaves knives hanging over the counter. Who does that! I think what’s helped me is to have multiple concepts going at once. If I get stuck, I go to another book. I’m working towards a series not just one story. So I feel less stuck when I choke and stall. Or just burn out. Like right now.. I’m taking a pallet cleanse doing other things. Then when I come back to It, it’s new again.
You are not behind…
Today I want to normalize something I see all the time. Most children’s book ideas do not fail because they are bad ideas. They stall because the author gets overwhelmed by timing, perfection, or the feeling that they are behind. If you are here and you have: • a half written manuscript • a finished draft you are afraid to show • multiple ideas but no clear next step • a book that missed a holiday window • a story you keep revising instead of finishing You are not doing it wrong. You are just in the middle. So here is today’s simple question. No pressure. No overthinking. 👉 What is the current state of your book right now? One sentence is enough. Messy is allowed. Unfinished is allowed. Honesty is encouraged. I will read every reply.

@Rachel White you can always use AI to experiment with types of illustrations. It’s a great way to play with style, and see your story come to life - even if you already have an illustrator. Think of it like storyboarding. I also used it to help me think through my text - “not show AND tell” so kids discover story in the picture too. Of course I’m brand new so what do I know. But for me, it’s better to move forward every day than feel stuck. You can ask AI “what’s the most popular illustration styles kids live and why” then make the same image in all the styles. See what feels good to you. I was surprised that what I thought would be good did not fit the warmth of the story. And every time you experiment, you get better - your writing improves too. At least it did for me.
