Welcome to Kids Book Academy 🤍
If you’re here, chances are you’ve been carrying a children’s book inside you, and you’re not quite sure what the next step is. This is a calm, supportive space for writers at any stage of the process…from idea to draft to published but stuck. There’s no pressure here. No rushing. No “do it this way or else.” We focus on clarity, honesty, and small steps that actually move the work forward If you’d like to start, a simple place is this: 👉 Introduce yourself and share what stage your book is in — even if that feels messy or unfinished. You’re welcome exactly as you are.

@Trevor Peat I have just begun working with an illustrator for my picture book. I just got the first sketch back yesterday! Some things I've learned. If you want to go traditional publishing, don't get an illustrator. If you want to self publish, obviously do get one! I am happy to talk with you about my experience so far. Like I said I am just getting into this world myself!

@Sophie Jomain I don’t know yet, I’m still researching
Where are you in your children’s book journey right now?
Let’s make today’s community stronger by learning about one another. 👇 In the comments, tell us ONE of these: 1. Your writing stage (idea / first draft / editing / stuck) 2. Your biggest win so far 3. One thing slowing you down right now Example: “I’m drafting chapter 2 and feeling excited but stuck on character voices.” No need to be perfect. Just share what’s real for you today.

Well, one of my books is in the beginning stages of being illustrated, as y'all know. Another is written. I personally love it just the way it is, but I know something isn't right. It gets too wordy in the middle I think. (It's a picture book) I just have so much to convey and only so many pages to do so!
And the Illustrations Begin!
I met with an illustrator yesterday! We are moving forward with the development of the main character to see if we can capture my vision and the mood of the book. It is actually happening!
And the Illustrations Begin!
Paying an illustrator?
I’m meeting with a potential illustrator on a Friday. Has anyone that has self published worked with a separate illustrator? What terms did you agree on? Pay one fee? Share profits?

@Nina Larbalestrier I hadn’t thought about that! I may use that idea for another book!
You don’t need to decide everything today…
Something I want to say out loud because I see this pattern constantly. Being stuck between choices is not the same as being stuck in fear. It often means you care enough to want to choose well. If you are deciding between self publishing vs traditional waiting vs moving forward fixing vs finishing You’re not failing. You’re standing at a fork. Here’s today’s simple question 👇 What decision are you circling right now but not making yet and what is the one thing you wish you understood better before choosing? One sentence is enough.

How self publishing works, especially with picture books. I want a real book in the hands of kids. I actually Chat GPT’d that very question this morning before getting on Skool and have a good starting place to start researching more.

@Zack Bush I have been looking at some options for printing. Everything has mixed reviews. Of course I want high quality, a hardback option, and to make some money on my book. I don't think those three things exist together...lol.
