💭 Real Talk
What’s the most challenging thing about learning salsa so far? Timing? Remembering steps? Confidence? You’re probably not the only one experiencing it. Share below 👇

@Kübra Yürekli I relate to this a lot. Honestly, I still feel this way sometimes. The moment you start caring deeply about your dancing is also the moment you realize how much there is to learn. That feeling never fully goes away and in a strange way, that’s actually a good sign. My advice is this: don’t measure your dancing by “how far you still have to go.” Measure it by how consistent you are with the process. Show up, train, stay curious, and allow yourself to enjoy the small improvements along the way. The dancers who grow the most aren’t the ones who feel “ready” they’re the ones who keep showing up even while feeling like they still have so much to learn. And the fact that you love it that much? That’s the most important part. ❤️

@Maria Ortiz I relate to this a lot. Many people who grew up dancing socially already have great instinct, rhythm, and joy in the dance. When you start training—especially something structured like On2—it can suddenly make you question things you used to do naturally. But that’s actually a normal part of learning. Training doesn’t erase your natural dance ability; it just gives you more tools and awareness. There’s usually a phase where things feel a little awkward or overthought because your brain is processing new information. With time, the goal is to blend the two: keep the musicality and freedom you grew up with, while adding the technique and structure you’re learning. When those two meet, that’s when dancers really start to feel confident again

Rembering Steps
Ashley in her real talk section was talking about challenges . facing salsa learners .. she mentioned timing, remembering steps and confidence .I talked several times about timing .Remembering steps is of course very important. One way of doing this is to write down details of the step after you have had the class.. like what was the name of the step.who taught it , describe the body movement, use of the arms, feet abbreviations to write things like LH , RH (Left Hand ,Right Hand) , CBL ( Cross Body Lead ) LOD ( Line OF Direction ) . Make up abbreviations that you will understand , use diagrams , charts .. Writing steps down will reinforce your memory of new steps and old ones and provide a check list for review and practice. . Don't always depend on muscle memory !

Love your insight Mahlon! Great point! Writing things down after class is a really helpful strategy & reviewing the step within the first 24 hours (even just marking it, walking through it slowly, or explaining it to someone else). Remembering isn’t just about retaining information; as much as it is about being an active learner and making sense of what you learned. When dancers start connecting the timing, body movement, and structure of a step, it becomes much easier to recall and apply later. Thanks for sharing this!
Today's live class
