Universal Tip # 8
Routines don’t limit children—they free them. What routines do you follow with your child or with your students?

I love this comment. I supervised in a Waldorf environment and my big take-away is that consistency is key. If children establish a routine (we call it rhythm) where the same activity happens in the same order every day, they have the security of knowing what comes next. That frees their minds and imaginations to focus on play during playtime, which is the foundation for all learning. And it supports them through the daily tasks children all encounter: eating time, clean up, transitions et cetera.
Universal Tip #3
Behavior is information. When we slow down enough to read it, children don’t have to escalate to be understood.

Understanding happens when we build relationships with individual children. Reading their behaviour - and anticipating it - becomes easier and de-escalation happens slowly and naturally based on what works for that particular child.
For educators and child care leaders:
In your experience, when do supervision challenges happen most during the day? Many teachers mention transitions, playground time, or busy classroom moments when children are moving between activities. I’m always interested in hearing different perspectives from those working directly with young children. Patreena Reed, MS. Ed.

Transitions for sure. We have a cubby area where more than one group gets ready for outside. We use small groups transitions and staff do not go anywhere without confirming numbers of children leaving and numbers that remain. It’s the only thing that works.
