Try this the next time your mind starts talking. There is a voice in your head that has something to say about pretty much everything. What someone meant. What they think about you. What might happen tomorrow. Something that happened five years ago that your brain has apparently decided is relevant again. And most of the time, we don't even question it. We hear the thought and immediately start following it. I've been practising something from The Untethered Soul that I find really interesting. The moment I notice my mind going into a story, I simply stop and observe it. For example: "They haven't replied. Maybe they're upset with me." Okay. That's a thought. I don't need to investigate it. I don't need to create ten more thoughts around it. I can just notice that my mind has created a story. Or: "What if this doesn't work out?" Again, that's my mind talking. I can hear it without making it my reality. This is where the practice becomes really powerful. Start catching the voice during ordinary moments. While you're driving. Making dinner. Scrolling your phone. Lying in bed. Having a conversation. Notice how quickly the mind creates explanations, predictions and little stories. Then ask yourself: "Who is noticing all of this?" Don't try to come up with some deep spiritual answer. Just pause. There is something in you that is aware of the thought. That awareness is what you're practising connecting with. And honestly, once you start noticing how much your mind talks, you might find yourself laughing at some of the things it comes up with. The thought can be there. You don't have to make a whole life around it. Try this today and see what happens. How often do you catch yourself believing a thought before you've even questioned it?
