Collecting SS at 62 Question
Hi Dr. Weir. Glad to be here. I'm about to be 62 want to start collecting social security, but I want to collect on my former spouse's record. We were married for 33 years. Can I still collect if he is still 3 years from retirement age? If not, is it possible to collect on my record then switch to his later?

Thank you Dr. Weir for your answer. To be clear, are you saying I can start to claim on my record then in 3 years when he is 62 claim on his? Or am I permanently tied to my own record if I start now?

Stuck
Good day Dr. Weir. It's my understanding that the SSA benefits are a month in arears, I asked this question: my husband passed away January 27th, 2026. His SSA December (sent in Jan) benefit was withdrawn from his checking account by the SSA. I spoke with them and asked why and also why he wasn't entitled to his February (Jan) benefit? All they say is he wasn't entitled to it due to his passing in January. The December (Jan) check is stuck somewhere in the void. I processed the 1724 form along with a copy of the death certificate, they have it, completed and an additional copy that is blank. What do I do to receive his 2 benefit checks?

The same thing happened to my mother. She passed the last day of May, so they took the entire May check.

Hi, I'm Anita, and I left a four decade career in corporate training & education. I joined this group to learn how to file for SS the right way.
