Delayed benefits when filing this year.
My FRA will be 10/31/2026. I will retire on 11/02/2026. I want to start my SSA and Medicare Part B benefits as of 12/2026. 1. What is the earliest date I can file for both? 2. Do I need to declare a VRDC? 3. Am I correct in thinking that my first check will come in the 4th week of 01/2027? Thank you.

I would call a couple of months before, actually four months before now, because it's taking so long for them to schedule appointments. I assume you had health insurance from work. That's why you delayed Part B. If so, that was definitely a smart decision to avoid paying that every month when you didn't need it. You don't need to declare voluntary delayed retirement credits unless you are going to not collect benefits. Then you get 8% added on to your Social Security check every year you delay starting, but it sounds like you're going to start, so you're not going to earn those. In terms of when you get your first check, if you start your benefits in November, then your first check will come in December. Yes, it will come on the fourth Wednesday of the month because you were born on the same day as me, Halloween! So, Happy Halloween birthday!

MEDICARE
When someone turns 60 and is receiving DWB benefits, I know it transitions to Regular Survivors Benefits. Does Medicare also stay with the person at age 60?
