Going back to work isn't always a straight path.
Finding a job isn't always a linear path. It would be must easier if the process was apply, interview, accept, start. But the reality is that things get in the way and that's part of it. The trick is to not make it mean anything about you, your worth, your value, or your ability. Here's what you can do when there is a roadblock that feels like a punch to the gut: Acknowledge that it sucks and feel the discomfort 💛Figure out what the actual problem was 💛If it's something you can fix then fix it 💛If it's not something you can fix, then let it go 💛Pick yourself up and go again You will get to the finish line - which in this case is a job offer. It just might take a little longer than you think it should and that's ok. What are your biggest obstacles going back to work?

I can translate this question to my situation by rewriting it as "What are your biggest obstacles getting to work?" As a retired educator and a budding entrepreneur, sometimes the biggest obstacle is that I want to play! When work feels fun, I more likely want to do it!

Avoid avoiding 🤔🫣
Avoiding is a powerful tactic that our brain uses to give us some relief from the stressor. This can be anything and especially the job hunt. Looking for a job is not for the faint of heart. It involves overcoming fear of putting yourself out there, rejection, and meeting (and impressing) new people. It's a lot. It makes perfect sense why you want to avoid that, but I want to let you know that avoiding doesn't fix. It only delays. And it makes the middle part of any new thing way more difficult than it needs to be. I suggest that instead of avoiding, you dive in with both feet, feel awkward, make the mistakes, and learn from them. This is the fastest way to the gain skills to do the thing. And then, before you know it, you'll be on the other side in expertise. Tell me the thing you're avoiding.

I was avoiding owning my expertise. I just decided I needed to be better about how I delegate my time. I need to stay aware of using learning to avoid putting myself out there. My future self is going to thank me for this!
Nailed it! But then...
My daughter is looking for a job and she is coming to me with questions (which I love 😍). She applied for this one job which she was interested in and excited about. Here's what happened: ✅She applied on Indeed ✅She got the phone interview ✅She nailed it ✅She got the in person interview We're on a roll... But then... They texted her that they have canceled the interview and said they are cancelling the position Wait! What?! 😮 A shock. A blow. A disappointment. BUT NOT A SET BACK! This actually happens more than you think. There are a million reasons why companies do this and 99% of the time it actually has nothing to do with you. Here's the way I like to think of this (because this has happened to me too!). I'm glad they're showing me who they are now so I don't go work for them and find out 6 months from now how terrible they are. So thank you rando business for showing your true colors ahead of time. You saved us all a lot of time 😁 So tell me - what’s the most disappointing job search moment you’ve had — and what did it end up teaching you? (and yes, it did teach you something 😉. Dig deep my friends! ❤️)

For me it was not getting a second interview. I asked the leader for interview feedback. He gave me none except that they had a lot of highly qualified candidates. Does that mean I wasn’t qualified enough?? Who knows? I got over it and later found out that system was in a lot of upheaval. Bullet missed!
