A grateful moment
Although it is hard bringing up children in a different culture with a different language, there are times when I am reminded of some of the more beautiful aspects of life here in Italy. This week, two incidents occurred which I wanted to share. Early this week, taking my 5 week old to do some grocery shopping meant that by the time I got to the checkout, someone was very cranky, hungry and crying a lot. Fortunately the lady behind me, who was on a crutch nonetheless, offered to help unpack my trolley then pack my shopping for me as I comforted my screaming baby. A few days later, and as I was waiting in line at the bakery section of the supermarket with my baby and numbered ticket, another lady spontaneously came up to me and exchanged her ticket for mine. It was the next number to be called. Would these acts have happened back in my hometown? I couldn’t guarantee it, but here in Italy there is something that surfaces when a baby is involved. Something deep within the Italian psyche that makes you feel like you really are part of a wider community.

Aww what a beatiful post, @Maria White I'm so glad you and your little one are being taken care of in your community. 🤗
A mindful moment
Being a part-time teacher, I start a little later on Fridays, so if I have the time, I grab a quick coffee from one of the cafes (bars) across the road from school. This morning, 2 mothers from one of my classes were there, however I did not notice them until I was leaving. After exchanging some words (in my broken Italian), they left. I then discovered as I went to pay, that they had already quietly paid for my coffee. Over my 20+ years of teaching, I’ve never had a moment like this, but it just goes to show that this job is fundamentally about cultivating and nurturing strong relationships - not only with students but the entire community. A lovely way to feel appreciated.

When needs must
Returning to (limited) online work this week with baby. So far, ok…he’s happy to sleep on my lap. Just wondering when it’s all going to come crashing down! 😅😆🤞

@Maria White aww be still my heart! I miss those days. I remember how hard it was, but I also know how quickly those moments pass. Enjoy! 😊
Not much of an original post, but...
I was wondering (for those with experience) what it was like giving birth overseas - highs, lows, cultural clashes, embarassing moments....

@Maria White Oh yeah…. Resentment, that’s the hardest one to shake. He took the entire Pantone! 😂😂
News update
Hi everyone! I’ve been absent for a little while because we have just welcomed the newest member to our family - Cesare. Although deep in the trenches of having a newborn and a toddler, I’m aiming to be back in full swing next week, so thanks for your patience 😁 In the meantime, have a great weekend!

@Maria White Awww it's quite a difficult transition for them (and you!) Luckily the little one is blissfully unaware of it all at the moment! 😉
