Sublime or ridiculous?
All channels talk about filling the repertoire with "bangers" - song that are recognisable, and have broad appeal across the world and different age groups. And audiences truly enjoy them - leave out "Brown-Eyed Girl" at your own peril. I've noticed how pub entertainers all play the same songs, and I've sometimes played bingo - ticking them off the checklist. Last night I watched someone play 12 of these core songs in a row, and it was all so predictable. Standards are useful, but I can't help but feel that a set only composed of bangers becomes a caricature of a gig. It's like having a magic power - it should be used wisely. How do you keep from sounding like everyone else, or a Spotify playlist?

We typically build with some standards, then chill with a song or two that we like (as long as they are at least relatively well known). To be honest, it is - like you said - like a magic power. We’re all magicians, and we all know how to do the same tricks. That doesn’t matter though because we’re not performing for each other, we’re playing for the audience. We’re not in the business of playing artistically brilliant songs, we’re here to give the audience a great time. A song everyone can sing along to will trump a “good” song every time. So a set of standards is no bad thing, really, it just may be a bit boring for the muso.

Tuning down???
So I used to play in Rock bands many moons ago. During that time I was the lead singer/rhythm guitarist. In those bands we always tuned down a half step (that made it easier to sing Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc.). That has carried on with my solo acoustic performances. My question is, how many of you tune down and if so, how low do you drop your tuning?

@Keith Homes You can’t help but laugh because he obviously didn’t have the chops to play in a sharp key so tried to play it off as some sort of moral stance. That’d be like me claiming that “I don’t do slide”, when in reality it’s in everyone’s best interests that I don’t!!!
