Social and Food Play - Session 3
Kairo was a little distracted today, but I was impressed that we were able to work through it and continue the game. Should I have ended the session sooner, since she was starting to disengage, or is it good to build up their stamina for play? @Alex Lato

Great problem solving! really good- when Kairo started to slow down you brought him back to the game! Overall change the proportions of behaviours/rewards(play) Shorter the time of the game (quality over the quantity) and ask for more stuff for you. You will ensure this way that the value of the play stays high and never gets boring.

@Samantha Preece yes- shorten play in general. So ask for 1 then quick polay or ask for more and quick play. do longer play event only as a jackpot :)
An activation attempt with Rocky.
I’m using a toy, because with food I wouldn’t even bother starting 😄 I’m careful not to put pressure on him with my body language and keep moving backwards, also deliberately avoid intense movements so that he doesn’t shut down. He offers either backward movement or a heel position. Eventually, he squeezes out a few little “ehhh” barks, and I reward those. I don’t take the toy away — I exchange it for food that I toss on the ground and finish everything with food chasing. If I manage to activate this sweet pup, it’ll be my biggest win of the year 😄

First of all - YOU WILL ACTIVATE HIM! :) there are couple of options we can do it. Couple of tips: Toy hidden- What I like to do is to have the toy hidden during activation especially when I'm teaching it. Once thing is I want active dog towards the handler without the toy another is when we are teaching it I want my dog to have one clear target - me - rather than 2- me and the toy. it just brings clarity and helps the dog :) rocky may offer behaviours lile walking backwards, heel etc because he is working for that toy. Body Language- I want to get smaller ( I can even go on my knees or just crouch) and sideways (not facing) Bark- If I'm still and my dog will bark I can or reward with the presence of the toy/food (that was hidden - good for clarity and confidence) or once I get reliable one or two barks just tease, move away and hide again. that will allow me to extend the duration without loosing a drive. Food? if I'm working with toys I don't necessarily exchange for the food as the I need to get the dog back to the toy mode. Instead of that after short tug and win - retrieve- I will grab the collar let the dog drop the toy and take the toy while still holding the collar, tease release the collar grab, allow for chase then hide and repeat the process. Ps. I usually don't ask for out cue even if the dog knows it. That will allow me to keep my dog in the high drive throughout the whole training session. Everything will get clearer in our toy modules. another great way for building activation is working on restrain. I have toy video on this but may do food as well : ) again great timing and reading your dog in the moment!
Dog activation towards a passive handler - Zip
In this video, my 8.5-year-old Zip demonstrates moments of activation using a toy, while integrating a behavioral element. Zip really enjoys physical play and absolutely loves this kind of interaction :)

Love it!!! really nice training 👏🤩 Tip for everyone- What I like to do is to have the toy hidden during activation especially when I'm teaching it.
