Lesson 50: I Am Sustained by the Love of God, discussion
This is one of my favorite lessons in the workbook. Feel free to look it up in your book or in your ACIM app, if you have one. "Here is the answer to every problem that will confront you, today, tomorrow, and throughout time. In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God. Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, 'protective' clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the 'right' people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers." This first paragraph is mind-blowing to me. How does the author of this book know me so well? Pretty much everything I ever try to use to be successful or secure on my own is listed in the very first paragraph. It is incredibly true, and yet I did not fully realize how much my faith was going toward "nothingness." I love all of the "insane symbols," and I find nothing wrong with any of those. I think I just need to pay attention to my motives when using them. I need to remember that they are nice to have, but they are not the point of my life. Being loved by God, loving God and reflecting God's love to myself and others is the real point of my life. "All these things are replacements for the love of God." "Do not put your faith in the worthless. It will not sustain you." I LOVE how direct the author of ACIM is throughout the book. There is so much authority in the manner in which it is written. The worthless will not sustain me. How many times do I turn to the worthless for help when I can turn to God, who has all power, and ask Him for help? "Only the Love of God will protect you in all circumstances." "It will transport you into a state of mind that nothing can threaten, nothing can disturb, and where nothing can intrude upon the eternal calm of the Son of God." This whole paragraph is incredible to me, and I am only quoting part of it. If I can understand that the Love of God is so powerful, it will protect me in any circumstance, it would not be possible be afraid of anything. I have been sitting with this idea for a while today. If I can let this sink in, how I see everything will change.

@Vera West This is really deep, Vera. The part about putting faith in things that don’t actually sustain us… that hits in a very real way. I think a lot of people don’t even realize how much they rely on those things until they stop and reflect like this. I also like how you explained the “Son of God” part, because that’s where a lot of people struggle, but the way you put it makes it feel more understandable and less conflicting. It feels like one of those lessons you don’t just read once, you keep coming back to it over time.

@Vera West I can see why you keep coming back to it. It feels like one of those reminders you need again and again, especially when life starts pulling your attention in different directions. Do you have any other lessons like this that stayed with you the same way?
Why I Am Starting This Group
I am a huge follower of Jesus, and I have always felt a very deep connection to God. In 2019, I was in a thrift store with my sister, and I picked up the book A Course in Miracles. Having heard about it before, I decided to buy it and see what it was about. I started reading it, and I could not put it down. I read it in any free time I could find. I read it for hours and hours in a sitting. I first read through the text, trying to see if it conflicted with what I believe as a Christian. I did not really find anything in the text that conflicted with Christianity. What I did find was a deeply loving and profound book that, in my opinion, had to be Divinely written. The author of this book knew more about me than I knew myself. The wisdom in it was like nothing I had ever read. The entire book discusses the importance of depending on God, listening to the Holy Spirit, and how important it is to love others. Loving others is loving yourself. To me, this book explained some of Jesus's teachings in more depth than I had ever read before. I feel like those who think A Course in Miracles conflicts with Christianity have not actually read it. I have created this community because it has been very hard for me to find Christians who openly love A Course in Miracles. We will go over some of the concepts in the book and how beautifully they can help us understand how to live like Jesus lived. Please join me, and let's see where this journey takes us.

@Vera West This is really beautiful, Vera. You can feel how personal this is for you, and I think that’s what will draw the right people in, especially those who’ve been quietly thinking the same way but haven’t found a space for it. I like that you’re creating a place where people don’t have to choose between their faith and their curiosity. Looking forward to seeing how this grows 🙏
