Finding the right book editor isn't easy. You have to know what you need, when you need to have that type of editing, the four different types of editing (developmental, line, copy, and proofreading), and if the editor you're using is a good personality fit for you and if they are a good fit for your book. There are lots of editors out there, and one thing I know for sure: most of the problems I hear from authors about using editors stem from working with someone who edits "part-time" as a side gig to their main job. I've seen people from the fields of education, consulting, and other industries that were totally unrelated to publishing and writing claim that they could successfully edit or write a book. Nothing could be further from the truth! A professional teacher who has an English degree does not qualify as a professional book editor. There are many facets of editing and publishing that an English degree, or its experience, simply doesn't cover. The one exception: part-time editors who have spent their professional careers in publishing and are phasing out their work because they plan to retire soon. @Michael McConnell is currently writing a book on finding an editor.
