The most overlooked driver of PANDAS and PANS might be your own home.
The mold that drives this illness often can't be seen at all. A pipe leaks behind a wall, dries out, and leaves growth hidden inside the house with no stain and no smell. And it isn't the mold itself that harms your child. It's the biotoxins it releases which are tiny poisons that float through the air and settle into the body. For 1 in 4 people, these biotoxins cause the immune system to react and it can't shut off the response, so the body stays inflamed and stuck. It won't affect everyone in the house the same way. Most people clear these toxins just fine. That's why the house gets ruled out so quickly, when for some, it's the thing behind it all. For a child with PANDAS or PANS, this matters more than almost anything. A hidden mold load keeps the immune system worn down, so every infection on top of that hits harder and pulls them deeper into systems failure. Your home is either helping your child heal or working against it. Where biotoxins are most commonly found: - Water damaged homes, from roof leaks, plumbing leaks, or flooding - Bathrooms with poor ventilation, behind tiles, under sinks, around tubs and showers - Basements and crawl spaces that stay damp without a dehumidifier - Behind walls and under flooring where old leaks dried unseen - HVAC systems, air ducts, and air conditioning units that hold moisture - Around windows with condensation, drafts from cold air or past leaks - Front loading washing machines, dishwashers, and fridge drip trays - Damp carpets, rugs, and furniture that got wet and never fully dried - Ceiling tiles and drywall that were touched by any water leak - Attics with roof leaks or poor ventilation - Schools and older public buildings with a history of water damage - Cars that have had leaks, flooding, or damp carpets A simple dust test can help you detect if there's mold and point you in the right direction to building a clean environment. Many parents say that simply by moving to a clean home, their child gets significantly better. Others will need treatment because they're locked in cell danger response.

Oh, you're list just gave me things to consider here that I hadn't before. I've been feeling such relief since we moved to a new home and started homeschooling (schools are so hard when you are trying to keep sick kiddos from getting sicker), but there are some places like the fridge dip trays and front loading washing machines that I hadn't even considered! Thank you!
What do you need now?
All day yesterday in my region we had a huge amount of rain and then a power outage last night for at least 6 hours or more. This morning I'm seeing post after post on Facebook about flooded basements, and in some homes the water came up through the toilets. That's sewage. Endotoxins, not just mold and biotoxins, and they drive immune activation on their own. Most people have no idea how dangerous this is to their health. Water sitting in an enclosed space for 48 hours is all it takes. After that, microbial growth follows, whether anyone can see it or not. For PANDAS and PANS kids, the very first step to recovery is getting into a clean environment. We cannot heal in the environment that made us sick. If you watched the first video series, Symptoms vs Systems, you'll understand that toxic load is the reason our kids are getting sick. And water damaged buildings are a big part of that load. One of the biggest missing pieces in the PANS and PANDAS treatment world is the foundation in the CIRS world. Every single CIRS protocol starts the same way: Dr Nathan, Dr Crista, Dr McMahon, Dr Holtorf, Dr Shoemaker, Dr Hoffman - all of them. Different treatments, different sequencing, different opinions on almost everything else. But every one of them removes the exposures before treating anything. And that includes biotoxins. Nobody argues about that part. You cannot detox a child faster than a building is loading them back up. I know how impossible that feels when you're in the middle of a crisis. When my son, Jayden was in extreme flares for years, I was trying to hold my family together and figure out how to clean up our environment at the same time and that was traumatizing on its own. I have so much information to give you and help guide you through this illness. But I want to give you what you need most RIGHT NOW. Tell me what you need first.

Interestingly, we had a ton of rain yesterday too, which made me think about the last house we lived in. It had flooded several times before we moved into it. Never properly cleaned up. Of course, we didn't know that in the beginning. I called in a company to assess for mold, took the little guy to doctors and naturopaths. Nothing made sense. We've since moved and a good portion (not all) of his physical, immune reactions have settled. I've only just started digging into this and to your information here, but now I'm wondering if connecting with you was more than a coincidence. I think there may be a layer here I didn't fully understand and no one considered. Either way, it's incredibly useful knowledge and I'm looking forward to learning more.

Welcome to More Than a Meltdown. If you're here, you're not waiting for someone to hand you a diagnosis or a protocol. You want to understand what's actually happening inside your child, and you're willing to do the work to get there. This is a research and education community. Everything in it is built so you can see your own child's picture clearly instead of guessing at it. 👉 Start in the Classroom Begin with It's Not In Their Head. It covers why the behavior was never behavior, what's happening in a body that can't recover the way it should, and why standard labs keep coming back normal when your child clearly isn't. Then move on to Symptoms vs Systems, which builds on it. Watch them in order. Everything else stands on those. This group is new, so I'm still adding research, courses and resources. The Screening Guide in Tools and Resources will help you find your next steps, and if you're not sure where to start, ask me in the community and I'll help you. Now introduce yourself. Drop a comment below and tell me what brought you here, and the one thing you most want to understand. I'm so happy to have you here.

Hi Candace! I'm Aimee. I'm glad to be here. I just recently heard about the connection to mold with PANDAS and PANS, which you mentioned here as well. I'm looking forward to digging in and following along.🙂
