Can you really hear your own pronunciation mistakes? 👂🎙️
happy Sunday everyone! 👋 A study by Dlaska and Krekeler showed something very real for English learners: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0346251X08000602 Most people can tell they have an accent…but they often struggle to hear exactly where the mistake is. 🤔 In other words: we often hear the version we meant to say, not always the version we actually said. 😅 That is why recording yourself is so useful. 🎧 Not to judge yourself.Not to feel bad.But to become more aware. Because once you hear the gap, you can start to fix it. ✅ So here’s a small challenge for today: 🎙️ Record yourself saying 2 or 3 sentences in English. 🎧 Listen back. 📝 Notice just one thing you want to improve. Small awareness = big progress. 🚀 Have you ever listened to your own English and thought, “Wait… do I really sound like that?” 😅👇

Yes 😄 I learned in a slightly different way. I paid close attention to how native speakers built their sentences in real conversations. That helped me understand grammar in a more natural way. ✍️ And yes… I do catch my own pronunciation mistakes. Sometimes I even ask people to repeat a word so I can hear the exact sound and improve it. 🗣️😊 For me, progress came from listening carefully, staying humble, and adjusting in real time.

@Sal Di Giallonardo 😄 Thank you! Honestly, as a native Spanish speaker, I didn’t even know how to read the IPA symbols at first. So for someone who doesn’t yet know what each symbol actually sounds like, reading them can feel illogical. Today I started studying the sounds behind each character one by one — for example, now I know that the “upside-down V” ʌ has its own specific sound. That already makes the system feel clearer. For me, going back to the fundamentals is what gives meaning to the whole process. First understand each sound, then the system starts making sense. Maybe many of us need to go back to the basics first 😄

@Madi Kayoumi welcome!!
Don’t learn only half the word!
Learning a word in English is not just about meaning. It is also about sound. 🎵🎸🥁 Take the word record: /ˈrekɔːrd/ as a noun /rɪˈkɔːrd/ as a verb Same spelling. Different stress. Different pronunciation. If you do not learn how a word sounds, you are only learning half of it. If you don’t learn the sound, you don’t really own the word. Watch my short video and tell me if you agree! 👍
