How did you choose your niche as a creative?
Hey everyone! 👋 Lately, I’ve been wondering what creative direction to pursue — there are so many exciting paths in 3D and motion design: product ads, explainer videos, storytelling, archviz, education, and more. And I’m curious… 👉 How did you choose your niche or area to focus on? Was it: Something you naturally enjoyed? Based on client demand or money? Something you stumbled into? Or did you try a bunch of things first? Would love to hear your thought process or journey. I think it’ll help not just me, but anyone else here still figuring it out. 🙌

there are some studios which touch multiple areas: https://tendril.studio/ https://mvsm.com/ https://territorystudio.com/ https://elasticpictures.com/ It's good to look at some of these for inspiration or ideas.

@Dhaya Fx I think they use freelancers who excel in specific areas. For instance, Ross Mason does really good lighting and art direction. Studios like ManvsMachine hire him for his niche. They hire a "Houdini person" for when they need something specific as well. https://iamrossmason.com/
Eagle App - Gather and Organize resources locally
https://eagle.cool/ I've been using this for a couple years to gather resources from sites as well as catalog my own resources locally. Sites like Pinterest use content from other sites which can go down, get removed or whatever. Eagle is sort of like Bridge but can do a lot more. It also has browser extensions where it can grab elements by either drag/dropping in a little pop up or right clicking. Lastly, it has its own plugin system that adds even more features. I'm able to convert webp into png. I can also uprez images through AI within Eagle. I can reverse image search the web. Lots more. CHeck it out.
ID Tools (copy/paste plugin for C4D, Maya, Blender and Zbrush) - FREE
Many of us are software agnostic or need to use various software either for conversions or to work on certain parts of the job. I've found ID Tools works pretty well copying from Blender into C4D. https://ihordmytrenko.gumroad.com/l/idtools_toolkit
Simon Lachapelle - 21 free HDRIs (8K non-commercial)

My Intro...
Hey! My name is Jeff. I'm in my 50s. I've been a 3D Generalist for over 20 years. I mainly worked as a contractor on government contracts. I took a break about 3 years ago due to burn out and meaningless work. Due to where I worked I have no portfolio to show potential clients or studios. Over the past few months I've been trying to find my way back into the industry, wanting to work remotely doing product visualization. Also, I moonlighted as a VFX artist for about 3 years working on no-budget films but never got paid over the course of 4-5 films. It was stuff like roto, FX, tracking and compositing. I sure could have used some of the new AI tools had they been around 5 years ago! I'm excited to see what I can accomplish with some extra guidance and push from this community.
