🚨 Community Update: What’s Up Boomer Is Just Getting Started
Hey Boomers 👋 If you’re reading this, you’re part of something special. This community is a unique mix of two worlds: 1. Long-time viewers and subscribers from the What’s Up Boomer YouTube channel… 2. …and new friends from the Skool platform, curious about what’s possible in this next season of life. While everyone’s path here is different, two core passions are pulling us together: ✅ Exploring the journey of creating a YouTube channel (yes, now is a perfect time to start — no matter your age) ✅ Making the most of how life has turned out — especially in this “retired, but not done yet” phase This is a space for honest conversation, creativity, trying new things, and finally doing the stuff you said you’d do once you had the time. There are no silly questions. No wrong starting points. Whether you’re hitting upload for the first time or just want deeper purpose in your days, you belong here. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be adding more ways to connect, learn, and support each other. For now, jump in and introduce yourself with a twist: 👉 What’s one thing you always thought you’d do in retirement but haven’t yet? Or 👉 What's one thing that was unexpected once hitting your retirement age? Let’s start dreaming out loud — and maybe doing something about it. Welcome 💛

@Karen Taylor I know, it was a bit surreal, but what was even weirder was when my firstborn who is a counsellor asked me how I got on and I said ok but there was. one odd thing, and I told her and she said asked me why I was so surprised. I was thinking about it, and then she said, that she had known for years! I was so used to being called "mad", "crazy", "insane", "weird". And I accepted that yet the real explanation behind my alien self was much harder to accept. Not because I saw it as a bad thing, but I almost felt like it was too good to be true, that I really was like I was for a reason, that I wasn't just a failure who was useless at life. And then when it sunk in, came the grief, of all that wasted time trying to be something, someone, I could never be, trying so hard that I broke myself, over and over. But now I am mending myself :) xxx

2026 scribbles
I’m spending some time this evening thinking about how i spent my time in 2025, and as a result how i might want to spend it in 2026. I like writing better than typing, because it slows down the process and i can think a little more while writing. (I got a new pen today which heightens the motivation a little, being a pen aficionado.) So i have an initial list. It will definitely change. Some things will move up to the top in importance, others will move down, some will be added. I’m asking God for wisdom as i write. How do you guys approach a new year?

@Fil Ladden Well Fil, that is an old one and it's not all about Sports, but I need to make some recent ones. I was just playing around with the Clips feature, inspired by Just Krista, and I published a Clip by accident and it got me comments and views and I did nothing, just pretty much let YouTube run with it, I wasn't sure what I was doing! I thought it was going to be a short but it's like a teeny video. Thing is I thought they were supposed to link to the main video but I am not sure if they do. Fun though! After a big slump I am fired and inspired! Thank you Fil, always...!

@Mark Eldridge posted the question of what person motivates you because of their passion and what they do. I really didn't have any one person that came to mind, and the person or persons I was thinking about weren't on SKOOL. Do you have a person or persons that you could talk to for hours? Who are they and why? If you read my answer via the link, you will find it would be 60+ year-olds, my grandkids, and the why. Or read here: "There are two people I can think of that are passionate and love what they do: 1. People 60+ who I really enjoy talking with about the perspective of their lives over the past 60 years. Interesting to see the differences of our paths and yet have ended up with such similar results and feelings about the world today. 2. My grandkids. Talk about passion and loving what they do. On New Year's Eve, my son went out to watch the fireworks. This was in Texas, in his neighborhood. He has three young girls, and the oldest was the only one that had stayed up and was so excited and was screaming "Yay! It's 2026!" That is cool. I want to hold on to that kind of energy and optimism." https://www.skool.com/aiexplora-skool-gems-1021/who-is-that-one-friend-you-could-talk-to-for-hours?p=e092723c

🎉 Why I Gave Up New Year’s Eve Parties for Sunrises
Over a decade ago, I stopped celebrating New Year’s Eve the usual way. (That's a story I will tell soon on the channel via a video.) No more midnight countdowns. No more noise, glitter, or groggy January 1sts. Instead, I started something that still gives me life and meaning each year: 🌅 I get up and watch the first sunrise of the year. Every January 1st, I pick a new location, rise early, and watch the sun come up. Sometimes I go alone. Sometimes others join. But it’s always a special moment. It’s how I choose to mark new beginnings — not with champagne and noise, but with quiet, hope, and light. It wasn’t just a random choice. There was a specific moment that made me shift from midnight to morning. From man’s clock to what I call God’s clock. For me, the new year truly begins when the first light shines the first morning. This year, I want to invite you to join me. ☀️ On January 1st, find a place to watch the sunrise. 📸 Take a photo or short video. 📩 Send it to me — let’s start the year connected in meaning, not just tradition. Want to join me?

I love this so much Fil! I am not a party person and have never enjoyed the few times I have celebrated in that way but I am a morning person and feel cheated if I am not awake before dawn… it is almost midsummer here now, so that’s around 4.45am! My most memorable December 31st was in 2011…. I was at Heathrow Airport, it was the last time I saw my mum. We left England and arrived in NZ on January 2nd. We saw 2 dawns and I guess it was January 1st at some point over the Indian Ocean but it felt surreal, and even though I am not really a big New Year person, it did feel that something was missing for ages. Here are a couple of my very quiet new year first light pics. Big love Fil, I love how you are bringing in all these very human touches to our little but huge community 🥰

So we have had bad storms, and gales and cold weather. It was too cloudy to see the sunrise. This is the view, all the plums which were about two weeks off being ready are on the ground, the ducks and pukekos are enjoying them! So from the front of the world, Happy New Year!
