A Vintage 1981 Seiko 5 Automatic Story, part 1
Yesterday I visited a semi-local indoor rummage sale market, where I stumbled upon a small stall dedicated to vintage watches. He had a number of decent quartz offerings, and a handful of automatic pieces. I threw £20 at this, a strapless Seiko 5 Automatic with a Silver dial, in seemingly good condition. The automatic movement works, but it’s not holding a charge for very long. Like, seconds when I should expect hours. I’ve dated it online as a piece from (most likely) 1981, and as such it isn’t equipped with a manual wind function. I’ve a strap on the way so I can test it properly with a wear, and I was going to hold off posting until that arrived, but randomly I saw @Brian McGuire is wearing this exact watch yesterday, so I thought I’d pipe up now! 😊 Like me, it’s old and likely in need of lubricant. To be fair, the seller's stall had a sign recommending all purchases have a service after the transaction, so I knew what to expect. In gently shaking the watch to charge, I may have shook something loose, so I’ll be dropping it off at a Watch Repair place for a service quote. It’s likely to be more than the cost of an outright purchase, but we’ll see. If it’s worth repairing and renovating, I’ll do that. If not? I’m only out twenty quid. I’ll post more details when I have them.
