Read the books you want to write, to write the books you want to read. ๐
As we know, to be a great writer, you should be an avid reader.๐
As Stephen King put it:
"If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write."
Specifically, reading the kind of books you want to create.
๐นIf you're writing romance, read romance.
๐ฎIf you're writing fantasy, read fantasy.
๐If you're writing thrillers, read thrillers.
You need to know what readers in your genre expect. Study how authors build tension, develop characters, pace their stories, and deliver satisfying endings. Writing fantasy? Notice how worlds are introduced without overwhelming the reader.
Read with a pen in your hand.
You can ask yourself:
- Why did this chapter keep me reading?
- How did the author introduce this character?
- Why did this scene make me feel something?
- What made the ending work?
Every book you read can be a lesson from someone who's already walked the path you're on.
๐ What genre are you writing, and which book has taught you the most about writing in that genre?
