Hello November.
In ancient Mesopotamia, the transition into the period corresponding to our modern November marked the dramatic shift from the scorching dry season into the critical, life giving winter rainy season. While we associate November with late autumn and decay, to the Babylonians and Sumerians, this time of year was an extraordinary, high stakes period of rebirth, agricultural engineering, and cosmic reckoning. In the Standard Babylonian calendar, the eighth month roughly aligning with late October and November was called Arakhsamnu (or Arahsamna), which literally translates to "the eighth month." In the older Sumerian calendars (like the one used in the holy city of Nippur), it was known as the month of APIN-DU-A, meaning "the month of the opening of the plow." While nature was dying in northern climates, Mesopotamia was aggressively waking up.
November was the literal opening of the earth.
