Tutankhamun’s Tomb Artifacts. From Discovery in 1922 to Present Display These images document part of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 by Howard Carter and his team. They show the artifacts in their initial condition at the time the tomb was opened, and then in their current state after decades of conservation, restoration, and museum display. The first image compares the inner coffin that held the mummy as it appeared in 1922, still covered with residual resin and organic materials, with the decorated golden coffin on display today. The second image shows the seated Anubis figure on its gilded wooden shrine in its original position inside the tomb, and then in its present display after cleaning and reassembly. The third image presents the golden funerary mask as recorded in the early photographs, still bearing traces of the materials that once covered it, alongside its current condition after those layers were removed and the details of the gold and semi precious stones became visible. The fourth image records the examination of one of the decorated shrines inside the tomb, followed by its present display as a gilded wooden canopic shrine. The fifth image shows a wooden chariot during early examination and conservation work, compared with its reassembly and current display together with its decorative elements. The final image compares the black and gold guardian (ka) statue in its position inside the tomb with its present museum display. These comparisons illustrate the nature of the archaeological work that began at the moment of discovery, careful photographic documentation, followed by cleaning and conservation processes that continued for decades, leading to museum presentation that preserves the objects and allows their study. The tomb itself remained relatively intact compared with other tombs in the valley, which made it possible to preserve a large assemblage of funerary furniture, tools, and wooden and golden structures dating to the late Eighteenth Dynasty.

The Convent of São Francisco do Monte is a historic Franciscan monastery in ruins located on the slopes of Mount Santa Luzia, in Viana do Castelo. It was built in the late 14th century founded by Gonçalo Marinho, (around 1392) a member of the Franciscan Order, it was one of the order’s first three monasteries. It reached the height of its splendor in the 16th century, when a major renovation transformed the monastery. The cloister and the church were built, creating a complex that bore witness to Franciscan life for generations. In 1569, the convent also became a novitiate, a function it maintained until 1625. During the liberal reforms of the 19th century, with the suppression of religious orders, the friars abandoned the convent. Its spaces were used for a brief period for agricultural purposes, while its decline slowly began. By the mid-20th century, all activity had ceased definitively. Today, amid trees, moss, and ruins, only fragments of that old convent remain. However, its stones still seem to hold the memory of those who walked its corridors and prayed within its walls. São Francisco do Monte did not disappear overnight. It was slowly lost, like so many other places that time has condemned to oblivion. It was abandoned in 1834 following the abolition of religious orders in the newly liberalized country, and subsequently passed through the hands of several private owners before falling into complete disrepair.
