Tenochtitlan, 1519 In the middle of Lake Texcoco stood a city that seemed almost impossible. Tenochtitlan was the heart of Mexica power: a vast metropolis linked by causeways, crossed by canals, surrounded by chinampas, and filled with markets, temples, palaces, and canoes. At its center rose the Templo Mayor, towering above a city built quite literally on the water. When the Spanish and their Indigenous allies arrived in 1519, they found one of the greatest cities in the world. Just two years later, Tenochtitlan would fall. And yet, beneath modern Mexico City, the memory of that extraordinary capital still endures.
