Dating to around the 7th century CE, the funerary mosaic mask of the so-called Red Queen of Palenque, discovered in Temple XIII at Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico, in 1994, was assembled from around 120 pieces of green malachite, jade and obsidian, with a large cylindrical ear ornament and traces of vivid red cinnabar coating from the burial giving the woman her famous modern name.
