Meet Professor Tonya Evans
Professor Evans is a distinguished attorney, Forbes contributor, and advisor at the highest levels of finance and technology.
Before attending Howard University School of Law, she played professional tennis for four years, even qualifying for the US Open in 1993.
Today she consults with governments around the world, helping demystify digital assets and separate fact from fiction so our communities are not left behind.
Rethinking Our Relationship with Money
At its core, money is a shared agreement built on trust.
Since the U.S. left the gold standard, our money is backed by the full faith and credit of the government
.
In reality, most money is already digital—when you use Venmo, Cash App, Apple Pay, or direct deposit, you are simply moving numbers across digital ledgers.
The banking system operates on fractional reserves, lending out deposits while insuring only up to $250,000.
Building “Black Web Street” & Indestructible Wealth
  • Just as Tulsa Race Massacre destroyed Black Wall Street, we must build systems that cannot be burned down or confiscated.
  • Professor Evans calls this new opportunity “Black Web Street.”
  • Crypto removes gatekeepers, allowing peer-to-peer exchange of value without relying on systems designed to extract from our communities.
  • Black and Brown communities are already over-indexing in crypto adoption, often using it for survival and access rather than speculation.
The Global Power of Remittances
  • Black and Brown families send billions in remittances each year to Africa and the Caribbean.
  • Traditional financial systems charge an average of 6.2% in global remittance fees, sometimes as high as 15%.
  • With crypto, thousands of dollars can be sent for less than a dollar and settle in minutes rather than days.
  • Countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa are already leading in practical crypto adoption.
Overcoming Fear & Protecting Ourselves
  • Clarity is the antidote to hype and fear.
  • Crypto scams are carried out by human criminals, not by blockchain technology itself.
  • The U.S. dollar remains the most common currency used in global money laundering.
  • Key Rule: Never leave your crypto on an exchange.
  • Secure assets using cold storage wallets like Ledger or Trezor.
Next Steps & Our 90-Day Challenge
Professor Evans generously shared a free worksheet resource and a discount for her book. I encourage everyone to get a copy—both for yourself and to share with others so we can educate and empower our community.
We are also launching a 90-day book club.
We’ll be reading The Color of Money, and Professor Evans has graciously agreed to return in 90 days to discuss it with us.
Let’s dive into the replay, take notes, and prepare for the challenge ahead.
