The Gift of This Moment
Let the sunrise remind you that every day is a gift. Let each moment remind you to be present. Let each breath remind you of your ancestors — their strength, wisdom, and love living within you. Pause. Breathe. Stand in the light. Give thanks for this moment. Reflection Questions: 1. What helps you stay present and appreciate the gift of today? 2. How do you see the wisdom or strength of your ancestors showing up in your life

@Teju Rice That's a good idea. Hmmm. You're making me think about my workplace and a garden. Do you have guide about starting a community garden at work?
Silence the Noise
Distractions will always find a way to show up. Excuses will always try to sound reasonable. Confusion will always try to cloud your direction. But growth requires a decision. Not every opportunity deserves your attention. Not every voice deserves access to your mind. Not every moment requires movement—sometimes it requires stillness. Protect your mind. Guard your focus. Move with intention. Reflection Questions: 1. What distractions or excuses are currently stealing your focus? 2. What would change in your life if you committed fully to clarity and stillness this season?

1. What distractions or excuses are currently stealing your focus? Running my aviation business. This industry is vulnerable to congressional decisions at Capital Hill and the White House the last year. My business is directly or indirectly impacted with government shutdowns of the FAA and DHS. Right now, DHS has shutdown which means that airports lack TSA workers because they are not being paid. This impacts pilot training at TSA airports. The Iran war has increased fuel costs meaning that it will cost more for pilot training and passenger and cargo transportation due to increased fuel costs for airplanes. We went through a similar problem during the government shutdown in the fall and the aviation industry has not fully recovered from that. I'm distracted doing business in a volatile market that is beyond my control in Washington D.C. I'm frustrated and distracted from journaling and prayer life. I have employees and vendors who depend on me for job security and clarity. It's a lot. I'm taking it a day at a time.

Leadership and confidence is my strongest area. I'm pretty solid on that. The area that needs the most improvement is sticking to my work out habit. The one action I will take this month is doing my yoga twice a week in the spare room.
When Are You Going to Rest?
When are you going to rest? Not collapse. Not burn out. Not crash. Actually rest. And enjoy it. You have limits. You have a nervous system. You have a soul that needs space — not just sleep, but silence. Not just time off. This photo of me holding a coconut was taken in Puerto Rico about three years ago. I remember feeling deeply relaxed… peaceful… present. And if I’m honest? I also felt guilty. One of my best friends was back in California, driving his taxi all day just to make ends meet. I knew so many people were struggling. Part of me wondered, Who am I to feel this good right now? But here’s what I’ve learned: We deserve a break too. The photo with the pillows was taken during one of my last nights in Nigeria. During that trip, my sisters — Chief Aikulola, Ifa Lola, and Hadiya — reminded me that comfort, even a little luxury, can belong in our spiritual retreats. Rest doesn’t make us less spiritual. Comfort doesn’t make us less committed. Peace doesn’t make us selfish. In fact, it makes us whole. And that’s the plan moving forward. So back to you… When will you rest? Not when everything is done. Not when you’ve earned it. Not when you break. Rest is not a reward. It’s part of being human. Maybe today you close the laptop 30 minutes early. Maybe you take the walk. Maybe you sit in the quiet without reaching for your phone. The world will keep spinning. And you’ll remember — you were made to be alive.

@Lisa Hopps I grew up in Cleveland! I'm from the eastside. I don't miss those windchill factors coming in from the lake where the wind feels like a knife slicing your face. Those were the days! Where are you in Cleveland?

@Lisa Hopps I grew up near Buckeye and Woodland, Glenville H.S. neighborhood, Wade Park area by the old Martin Luther King, Jr. shopping center, and near 55th and Superior. I lived all over the east side. I used to hang out at the Arabica Cafe at Shaker Square doing poetry slams when I was in high school. I left Cleveland after high school and haven't lived there since. I went to college, enlisted in the military, lived on the west coast, Pacific Northwest, and Southwest. I moved to Puerto Rico in 2019 with my husband and son to start our pilot school business that has expanded back in New Mexico as well. My youngest brother lives in Cleveland but the rest of my siblings and including my parents have moved. We are originally from Georgia and moved to Cleveland when I was about 4 years old after my dad finished the Army. I miss the hot dog stands in downtown on Public Square. I used to always go to this Arab guy to buy polish boys back in the 90s.
