All you need in life is a good bed, a comfy pair of shoes and a good pair of headphones
Two things I adjusted for accuracy: I used "AirPods Max" for the product name, and I added a tip to turn Spatial Audio off. Spatial Audio blends the left and right channels, which can weaken the ear-to-ear effect your tracks rely on.
🎧 Why Your Headphones Matter for Our Meditations
A lot of you have asked what headphones to use, so here's a simple guide.
Why headphones matter
The meditations are built to move from ear to ear. Each ear receives a slightly different tone, and your brain responds to the difference between them. That's what gently guides you into deeper states of relaxation, focus or sleep. It only works when each ear hears its own channel clearly, so headphones aren't optional. Speakers won't do it.
Frequency response
This is the range of sound a pair of headphones can play, from the deepest lows to the highest highs. Human hearing covers roughly 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, so look for headphones that cover at least that. Cheaper headphones often lose the deep bass tones and the delicate high shimmer layered into the music, which means you're missing part of the experience.
In-ear vs over-ear
- Over-ear cushions sit around your ears. They're usually more comfortable for long sessions and give a more open, spacious sound. This is my preference for meditation.
- In-ear buds are good for travel and for lying on your side, but they can get uncomfortable over 40+ minutes, and cheaper ones lose a lot of the low end.
Noise cancellation
This blocks out the world around you: traffic, fridge hum, household noise. It's brilliant for going deep, especially if your space isn't completely quiet. It's not essential, though. A quiet room works too.
Comfort
Some of our sessions run 40–80 minutes. If your headphones pinch or get hot, your body won't fully let go. Soft cushions and a light fit make a real difference.
Wired vs Bluetooth
- Wired gives the purest sound quality. There's no battery to die mid-session and no dropouts.
- Bluetooth is more convenient, but the sound is compressed slightly. Good Bluetooth headphones still work well, just keep them charged.
What I use
- Sennheiser HD 598 (wired). I've used these for years and they're still excellent. They're about 10 years old now, so you'll mostly find them second hand, and they're well worth picking up if you see a pair.
- Sennheiser HD 599. This is the updated version and a great mid-price option for a similar sound.
- Apple AirPods Max. I've just invested in these. The sound quality is outstanding, and they're excellent for deep relaxation. They're expensive, and they work best with iPhone and Mac. Tip: turn Spatial Audio off when you use them with our meditations, so each ear gets its own channel as intended.
Note that both Sennheisers are open-back. They sound beautifully natural, but they let in some outside noise, so they're best used in a quiet room.
Rule of thumb
I can't recommend a specific pair for everyone, since budget, comfort and ear shape all vary. As a general guide, choose headphones with a good frequency response, choose comfort for long sessions, and always use headphones rather than speakers.
Your headphones are the doorway into the experience. A good pair lets you hear everything that's been built into the music. 🙏
