I remember when I first started teaching in the community, (as opposed to the health clubs). I had found a hall at 6:30 on a Monday evening. Prime time. I was dead excited, so I set about telling as many people as possible.
I spent hours traipsing round local libraries and cafes, asking if I could put posters up on their boards and in their windows. It took ages, faffing about with parking and driving all over the place. It was hugely time consuming, but I had to reach local people, and Facebook was still in its infancy. And I decided older people weren’t to be found online.
Well, the result? Nothing. No flood of students, no money ringing in my virtual till.
So there I was spending hours, putting in the literal leg work, just because I thought that’s where my clients were hanging out. I figured the type of people who wanted a community class would hang out in places…. well…. in the community.
How wrong I was. It turned out they all much preferred a leaflet through the door, and a class that was on their doorstep. Like, right on their doorstep. No good if it was a mile down the road, that was too far. So I set about finding another venue, just on the other side of town, and printing out some new leaflets.
Once I understood that, I could target my energy and resources in the right way - by giving my clients what they actually wanted. (Not what I thought they wanted.) Then things really took off 🚀
