Be fruitful and multiply
In Genesis 1:26-28 we read
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
I was intrigued by the word "dominion" because I'd really felt from the Lord to "take dominion" in an area of my business. Dictionary.com defines it as "sovereign authority", "rule; control" which has been my predominant understanding.
However, when looking at it from a Hebraic worldview we find something rather different. "Dominion" is connected to 3 Hebrew words which I believe provides a far more accurate viewpoint of this word:
- Radah:
To rule responsibly.
Stewardship, governing with care, wisdom and restraint
Accountable to God, not autonomous but delegated authority
- Yarad:
To come down or humble oneself
Not ruling over, but serving under (sounds like what Jesus modelled)
A descent to responsibility, not ascent to power
Diving Kingship; God rules by sustaining, not coercing
- Malach
To reign as king
From a Hebraic worldview is that kingship is covenantal. A king is expected to protect, provide and uphold justice not exploit.
Dominion is a sacred trust, reflecting God's reign, not a license for exploitation.
Which brings us to the core of it all. Dominion is Stewardship. A call to serve.
- Work is sacred, a form of worship extending God's order and care. (Remembering to "work as unto the Lord")
- Creation is relational. Dominion means nurturing life, not extracting value
- Authority is humble. True dominion lowers itself to lift others up
Sounds just like Jesus: The greatest in the Kingdom is a servant.
So as you steward this week, I pray God's grace abounds to you with wisdom, knowledge and understanding to lead your business well and your do your job with excellence.
