Pueblo First Timer?
I don’t think people realise what it’s like to visit a pueblo for the first time.
If you have never visited a white washed village in Spain (pueblo blanco) I have a 6 tips for your first visit.
👟 Wear decent shoes. Cobbles, narrow steep streets and uneven ‘pavements’ are a pair of flip flops worst nightmare! Sturdy flat shoes are a must!
🚘 Be prepared to park on the outskirts and walk in to the centre. Many village roads are resident only access if any access at all! Some roads are so narrow that even if you can drive through the damage to your wing mirrors and back end just isn’t worth it.
🛍️ Be aware of market day. The mercadillo is always busy, people come from the campo and local towns to shop so there is usually less parking for visitors unless you get there really early!
🌤️ Visit in mid season. There is likely to be plenty of parking, lots of places to eat and the heat is more bearable. There is plenty of shadow between the narrow streets but at the hottest time of the year the air can feel a bit ‘heavy’.
⛰️ If you are pueblo hopping via the mountain roads beware that some aren’t fully finished, there are narrow pass places and there is always the chance of getting stuck behind a herd of goats and the possibility of meeting a burro or two!
💬 Listen for the locals, especially when choosing where to eat & drink. If the locals are eating and drinking there it is likely to be decent, using local produce and good value for money.
💚 Fit For Spain Top Tip: Get some hill walks in before you go or if there is a couple of steep roads where you live tackle them a few times, build up your walking stamina and fuel up well at breakfast!
