Today reminded us that learning doesn’t always look like lessons…it looks like baking, digging, laughing, and discovering together. This morning started with a lovely dog walk the beautiful hollie plodding along gracefully, the younger one (Suzie) still convinced She’s auditioning for the role of “local nutter.” Dylan wasn’t quite himself at first, and we thought the day might just slide downhill from there. But that’s the thing about life (and unschooling), you never really know when it’s going to flip itself upside down and surprise you. 🙏 Back home, Dylan suddenly announced he wanted to bake. So, apron on and flour everywhere, we baked. That’s when the learning rabbit hole opened. He’s been completely fascinated by gold mining and prospecting lately, and he was desperate to show me a YouTube series he’s been following. So there we were, brownies and tea in hand, being educated on sluices, pans, and the glint of gold dust. 🪙🪙 Later, I put on a series about monsters & myths, which sent us spiralling into a lively debate: what’s real, what’s just a story, and how on earth do you sort fact from fantasy? (Answer: by digging deeper, questioning everything, and letting the conversation take you where it needs to go.) 👌 In the afternoon, just after the rain had passed, we took another walk with the dogs, which was lovely, though Dylan tried to dig for gold halfway down the lane. Sadly, all he unearthed was mud and an annoyed worm. 😂 Dinner rolled round, and Dylan set the table like a pro, then promptly suggested a family mining session…on Roblox. Even Nathan joined in. Cue an hour of us discussing gold, where it comes from, what tools you need, how much it’s worth, while mining blocky digital nuggets together. Nathan can now officially play Roblox, though whether he understands it is another question. ❤️😂 So, a day that started a bit shaky turned into one of those wonderful, unexpected learning adventures. Proof once again that some of the best days can’t be planned, they just happen.

We kicked things off with a walk in the wood, me, Buddy the dog happily sniffing everything like he’d just discovered nature existed, and Dylan cruising beside us on his bike like a woodland speed demon. The air was crisp, fresh, and only mildly filled with Buddy’s dramatic panting soundtrack. Then came swimming. Dylan, clearly part-merman, pulled off a full lap underwater. Nathan and I basically turned into those overexcited parents on the sidelines, if we had pom-poms, they’d have been shaking. Back home, it was dinner prep time. Dylan took charge of the onions and decided to test out some “life hacks.” Attempt #1: saucepan lid. Verdict = space alien. Attempt #2: bread in the mouth. Verdict = soggy toast. Both failed, and the onions won, he ended up crying tears of laughter and onions into a pillow like they had personally betrayed him. We finally ate (minus the soggy bread), then wrapped up the day with a solid Roblox session. Nothing like bonding over blocky chaos after a day of proud wins, onion tears, and laughter. All in all: fresh air, proud parent moments, and proof that onions are the real villains of family life. 🧅😂
