A few of you committed to testing your shampoo's pH this month. But before you do, there's an important nuance you need to understand.
**THE pH PARADOX:**
Your scalp's natural pH: 4.5-5.5 (acidic)
pH-balanced shampoos (4.5-5.5) are GENTLE. They preserve your acid mantle, keep the cuticle flat and don't strip your scalp.
But here's what most people don't realize:
**Gentle doesn't always = effective at removing buildup.**
If you have:
• Heavy product buildup (gels, butters, oils)
• Scalp grease or sebum accumulation
• Residue from hard water or chlorine
A pH-balanced shampoo alone won't cut through it.
You need a stronger cleanse FIRST.
**THE PROTOCOL:**
Think of it like this:
**Step 1: RESET (Weekly or As Needed)**
Use a clarifying/detox shampoo to remove buildup and reset your scalp at less once a month, weekly or as needed. This depends on how often you use products and oils.
Yes, these are often more alkaline (pH 6-8). That's okay - temporarily.
Their job: Strip away everything (buildup, grease, residue) so you have a clean baseline.
**Step 2: MAINTAIN (Rest of the Week)**
Switch to a pH-balanced shampoo (4.5-5.5) for regular washing.
Their job: Cleanse without disrupting your acid mantle.
Use these when:
→ You haven't used heavy products
→ Your scalp feels clean (no buildup)
→ You're maintaining, not resetting
**WHY THIS MATTERS:**
If you ONLY use pH-balanced shampoos but you have chronic buildup:
→ You'll feel like your hair is "still dirty" after washing
→ Products won't absorb properly (sitting on top of buildup)
→ Scalp issues persist (buildup clogs follicles)
If you ONLY use clarifying shampoos:
→ You strip your acid mantle repeatedly
→ Scalp overproduces oil to compensate (greasy faster)
→ Cuticle stays swollen (frizz, breakage)
**The solution: Both. Strategically.**
**HOW TO TEST YOUR SHAMPOOS:**
You'll need pH test strips (Amazon, ÂŁ5-10).
**Step 1:** Dilute shampoo in water (1:10 ratio)
**Step 2:** Dip the pH strip
**Step 3:** Compare to the color chart
**What you're testing for:**
🧪 **Clarifying/Detox Shampoo:** pH 6-8 (more alkaline, stronger cleanse)
→ Use weekly or as needed to remove buildup
🧪 **Maintenance Shampoo:** pH 4.5-5.5 (gentle, preserves acid mantle)
→ Use for regular washes when scalp is clean
**You need BOTH in your rotation.**
**WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?**
Ask yourself:
âť“ Do you use heavy products regularly (gels, butters, oils)?
âť“ Does your scalp feel greasy even after washing?
âť“ Do you have visible flaking or buildup?
**If YES:** Start with a clarifying cleanse. THEN switch to pH-balanced maintenance.
**If NO:** You can go straight to pH-balanced shampoos for regular use.
**DROP YOUR SETUP BELOW:**
What's your current routine?
• Clarifying only?
• pH-balanced only?
• Both?
