Self-Examination Devotional - Day 1
“Search Me”
Scripture Foundation:
Psalm 139:23 (AMPC)“Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!”
🔍 Highlighted Exegesis — “Search Me Thoroughly.”
David is not offering God casual access—he is granting full investigative authority over the deepest parts of his inner life.
The Hebrew verb for “search” (ḥāqar) means:
  • to dig
  • to penetrate
  • to examine with intention
  • to uncover what is hidden
This is not a surface-level spiritual check-in. This is invitation-based exposure.
David understands something most believers avoid: You cannot be transformed by a God you refuse to let examine you.
He is essentially saying: “Lord, don’t let me hide from myself. Reveal what I cannot see.”
This is the posture of a mature believer—one who desires alignment over comfort, truth over image, and wholeness over performance.
📖 Reference Scriptures
  • Jeremiah 17:10 (AMPC) — God searches the heart and tests the mind.
  • Hebrews 4:13 (AMPC) — Nothing is hidden from His sight.
  • Psalm 26:2 (AMPC) — “Examine me, O Lord, and prove me.”
  • 1 Samuel 16:7 — God looks at the heart, not outward appearance.
  • Proverbs 20:27 — The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.
🧠 Life Application — Day 1
Today is about permission.
Before God can purify, correct, or realign, He must first be invited to search.
This is the day you open the door to divine inspection—not with fear, but with expectation.
Pray this throughout the day: “Lord, I give You access. Search me thoroughly. Reveal what I’ve ignored, justified, or minimized. I choose truth over comfort.” Your fast begins with surrender, not striving.
📝 Reflection Questions — Day 1
  1. What areas of my heart have I avoided bringing before God?
  2. Where have I relied on self-awareness instead of God-awareness?
  3. What thoughts, attitudes, or motives might God want to expose in this season?
  4. Why is it difficult for me to invite God into certain parts of my inner life?
  5. What would change in my life if I truly allowed God to search me thoroughly?
