That's what a mom asked me out of frustration and confusion.
This mom tried everything she knew to console her daughter but nothing seemed to work.
Her daughter kept saying:
"Mommy, I'm sad."
And when the mom asked, “What’s wrong?”
Her daughter would say:
“I don’t know. I’m just sad.”
That’s hard for a parent.
Because when your child is hurting, you want to fix it.
But how do you fix it when they can’t even explain what’s wrong?
So instead of focusing on the sadness only...we looked
deeper to find the core cause.
I asked the mom a few questions,
and after listening to her answers I noticed a few patterns.
Her daughter is what I call a "Sensitive Soul" child.
These kids feel emotions deeply.
They crave warmth, connection, and emotional intimacy.
I also noticed that the mom just had a new baby.
Before the baby came, her daughter had been the only child.
Her daughter was getting all of mom's attention,
cuddles, conversations, and little moments of connection.
But now, the baby needed mom too.
This 3 year old daughter didn't know what she needed.
She didn't know how to express what she was feeling other than to say
"Mommy, I'm sad".
And this reveals the importance of understanding your child
on a deeper than surface level.
Because sometimes their actions aren't the core problem.
Sometimes their actions are a signal of something beneath the surface.
And when you understand the signal, you can respond with more wisdom.
I suggested to the mom, that she spend more one-on-one
time with her daughter.
Even if it's just once per day - or once per week.
She took that advice, implemented it, and now her daughter doesn't
say "Mommy, I'm sad" as much as she once did.
