Yesterday I was at the Texas Art Gallery - a tiny community run gallery, where I grew up. This was a display of the most exquisite little dresses with beautiful embroidery and smocking and handmade lace from the 1930s to the 50s. Jane Henry, the curator, was perplexed as to how to display these garments so went across to the newsagent, bought a roll of brown paper, stuck it to the wall and then hung the dresses. What started to happen was people writing little notes with pencil next to the dresses. An expression of appreciation and awe.
