I was recently down at the Gothenburg Book Fair. Karma & Jonar is always represented there through our publisher Bookmark, but this year the theme was gaming, so it was especially important for me to be there. I was invited to speak on several panels, and we also got the chance to show a demo of our game, Karma & Jonar – The Rock Trolls. I spoke about the process of building an IP across different kinds of media, and I also gave a presentation on turning a book into a game. Preparing it was a great opportunity to think through everything we’ve learned over the last few years. To make a great game based on our books, we had to go back to the very essence of our IP. What is it really about? Friendship, forgiveness and cooperation. Then we had to find a way to translate those themes into gaming. And along the way, of course, make it fun! An illustration can make a page beautiful, but when it is combined with the right text, spacing, page size, and layout, it can completely change the reading experience. For illustrators and authors creating picture books, children’s books, journals, or other illustrated projects, getting the pages arranged correctly can sometimes be just as important as creating the artwork itself. I help with book formatting, editing, proofreading, and preparing illustrated books for publishing, making sure the text and illustrations work well together and the final book looks clean and professional. I’m curious to hear from the illustrators here: What do you find more challenging after the artwork is finished, putting the pages together, working with the text, or getting the final book ready for publishing?
