One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through horsemanship is that communication starts long before we ever ask a horse to do anything.
Before I step into the round pen or pick up a lead rope, I take a moment to listen. Not with my ears — but with my eyes, my energy, and my intention. Horses are constantly reading us. They notice if we’re calm or hurried, confident or unsure. They feel what we bring before we ever say a word.
When we take the time to match their rhythm — to breathe, to soften, to notice how they’re feeling — everything changes. The work becomes lighter, and trust grows naturally.
In this week’s post and video, I’ll show a few moments that highlight this idea — not training for obedience, but creating a space where the horse wants to join in.
Take a moment next time you’re with your horse — before haltering, before asking — and just be still. See what they offer when there’s no pressure.
I’d love to hear what you notice when you try it. Feel free to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments.
I popped in one of my liberty session videos here, this shows connection and there is no words just body language from both of us.
See you in the circle,— Stacey
