More and more, as a counsellor, I find I'm working with burnout in clients. A massive roadblock to recovery is that we completely misunderstand what burnout actually is. Clients tell me all the time, I snap at loved ones and i cant sleep! They think its just tierd and a holiday will fix it! And on returning to work quit in 2 weeks of coming back. Here are two of the most common myths I see tripping people up: Myth 1: "You just need a long holiday" The belief is that burnout is just extreme tiredness, and a long weekend or a few weeks off will fix it. The Reality: Rest resets fatigue, but burnout is a chronic nervous system state. Holidays pause the stressor, but unless you change how your biology, boundaries, and internal rules process stress day-to-day, you’ll be burnt out again by day three back at work. True recovery requires nervous system regulation and structural shifts, not just a beach trip. Myth 2: "Burnout is a time-management problem" The belief is that you’re burnt out because you don't manage your time, calendar, or workload properly. The Reality: Burnout is rarely about a lack of efficiency. In fact, highly productive, organised "over-functioners" are often the most vulnerable because they use those exact skills to squeeze even more into their day. It’s an overload of chronic cognitive and emotional load, not a skill deficiency. If these myths sound familiar, you're not alone. Although burnout is often researched in relation to work, the biology is far more complex and the deeper story much richer. After over a decade working in some of the most complex workplaces Australia has to offer, I've put together "The Pocket Method"—a complete framework for burnout prevention and recovery. We dive deep into the practical, biological steps required to actually shift your system out of burnout and build sustainable capacity. You can check out the framework right here in the community. I'd love to hear your thoughts—drop a comment below and let me know if you've ever fallen for either of these myths!
