"How can I be substantial if I do not cast a shadow? I must have a dark side also If I am to be whole." — Carl Jung
I leave this quote here today not as a lesson, but as an invitation to consider the true nature of our Work.
In the modern world, we are often taught that the goal of the inner journey is "healing"—a word that has come to mean the medicalized soothing of the false self and the patching of wounds so we may fit back into society's standards of "normalcy."
Jung viewed this type of healing as a Solar term—a focused effort to "fix" a symptom as if it were a broken part in a machine. He famously noted:
"I do not want to cure my patients, but to help them become themselves."
To Jung, a "symptom" was never something to be deleted; it was a Signal from the Shadow. It was a beacon marking the spot where the excavation must begin. He knew that "normalcy" is often just a well-maintained cage, and he didn't want his patients to be "healthy" by the world's metrics—he wanted them to be Wholly Real.
To be substantial is to occupy space. To occupy space, one must cast a shadow. In the Grey Order, we recognize that the shadow and the light are the two parts of a single, ancient whole. They are the King and the Queen. When we stop trying to "cure" the dark and instead choose to incorporate it, something new is born: the Rebis.
The Rebis is not a "healed" version of your old self. It is an alchemical fusion—a new whole that is forged from the reunion of everything you are, and everything the world taught you to hide. It is the transition from a "well-maintained cage" to a Finished Build.
Reclaiming the shadow requires a heart that does not flinch in the fire. It requires a container that is solid, steady, and capable of holding the "heat" of the truth without judgment. I am quite sincere in my commitment to providing that space here. We do not wag fingers at the dark; we welcome it as the raw material for the Rebis.
A Question for the Site -
If we step back from the modern urge to be "soothed," and we look instead at the pursuit of being Wholly Real:
When the ego flairs and insists "I am whole," what is the Signal from the Shadow that is actually trying to speak to you—and what part of yourself are you ready to reclaim today?
