How you start your day is vital to setting the stage for completing projects. This will probably be a series of posts because there’s a lot we could say about how to start your work day, but I’ll begin with the beginning, and that is to create some sort of start of day ritual if you haven’t already (pro tip—you probably already have, and it may need some tinkering).
While it may sound magical or quasi-religious, what I mean by ritual is some sort of practice that helps you transition into a headspace where you’re able to focus well on what you need to do, and are well-equipped to launch into work. Some components could include meditation or some other sort of intention-setting like drafting a list of three top priorities for the day; reading, writing or thinking about your big picture goals and desires for your work; getting outside in natural light, working out, or some sort of circadian rhythm setting to help calm your body; journaling or getting some initial thoughts down and out of your head so you can focus more deeply on priorities; and setting your workplace up for comfort and productivity with a clean quiet space, necessary tools, and appropriate beverage selection. Having such a ritual helps quiet your mind, get you started on a productive and focused path, and sets up an environment that is comfortable and minimally distracting.
