150 Forms of Poetry – Day 3: The Triolet
Welcome to Day 3 of our 150 Forms of Poetry journey! Today's form proves that sometimes saying something more than once can make it even more powerful. 📜 History The Triolet originated in medieval France and became popular because of its elegant use of repetition. Though it's only eight lines long, it can leave a lasting impression. How It Works A Triolet has: 8 lines Only two rhyming sounds Repeated lines that create a musical rhythm. The pattern looks like this: A B a A a b A B Line 1 is repeated as lines 4 and 7. Line 2 is repeated as line 8. The lowercase letters rhyme with their uppercase counterparts. Example The morning sun begins to climb, Its golden light renews the day. Each heartbeat keeps a steady time. The morning sun begins to climb. Hope blossoms softly, so sublime, And worries slowly drift away. The morning sun begins to climb, Its golden light renews the day. Today's Challenge Write a Triolet about hope, change, or a memory you can't let go of. Don't be afraid of the repeated lines. Instead, let them grow stronger each time they return. Share your Triolet in the comments, encourage another poet, and let's keep expanding our creative toolbox.
✍️ 150 Forms of Poetry – Form #1: Pantoum
Welcome to the first installment of our 150 Forms of Poetry series! Throughout this journey, we'll explore poetic forms from around the world. Some will be familiar. Many will be completely new. Each one will challenge us to think differently about how poetry can be written. 📜 History The Pantoum originated in Malaysia as a traditional oral poetic form before making its way to Europe in the 19th century. It has since become a favorite among poets because of its musical, almost hypnotic repetition. 🖋️ How It Works The Pantoum is built on repeating lines. - It consists of four-line stanzas. - The 2nd and 4th lines of each stanza become the 1st and 3rd lines of the next stanza. - The final stanza often circles back to the opening lines, giving the poem a satisfying sense of completion. The repetition allows ideas and emotions to deepen each time they're revisited. 📖 Simple Example The evening whispers through the trees. The stars awaken one by one. The river carries quiet dreams. The day has yielded to the sun. The stars awaken one by one. Moonlight settles on the stream. The day has yielded to the sun. The night becomes another dream. 🎯 Your Challenge Write a Pantoum about a memory that keeps returning to you. Don't worry about making it perfect. Focus on letting the repeated lines take on new meaning as your poem unfolds. Post your Pantoum in the comments, encourage one another, and let's discover together why this centuries-old form has captivated poets around the world. Welcome to Form #1 of our 150 Forms of Poetry journey!
Challenge
Hi everyone! I’m challenging you to write a six line poem with a PUNCH. Take off the readers’ head with an emotional bat. Sometimes the shortest poems are the most impactful, interesting and stick with the reader. Give it a try!
Blue
Im feeling blue like brass tunes, weighed down underneath heavy jazz, but I can’t hear the music or understand the muse, just background sound to another outsider here for some amusement; Parking myself to watch the bodies bounce like crickets, the people are cutting up and down the floor with classic moves and intentional switches from ten toes of one foot to their own flow and back again, their movements like life, unscripted. Here the heat escapes and climbs like friction or a static shock, hot like streets underneath summer sunbeams, I’m sweating without participating, perspiring beneath a melancholy looming uncontrollably over me, fighting to avoid feeling defeated or downtrodden, run down and beat up by a life I can’t seem to figure out the moves to; Im circling the spot, obsessing over this mental block, I can’t seem to build with and spiraling with thoughts and questions like: If life’s a game are you playing to win or playing for your enjoyment? If you’re playing for enjoyment how does one afford it? And if you’re playing to win then what is it that reports it and what measurements record it? All around me humanity walks through waves of personal and external struggle, wading against the wake and into an unknown that renders my own dancing feet with an unbearable stagnancy, So here I sit stationary, just a spectator praying tomorrow treats me fairly.
