Welcome to Teaching for a Complex World
Welcome—I’m genuinely glad you’re here.
Teaching for a Complex World is for educators and others who care about the world learners will inherit and want to understand where education fits within the work of creating more sustainable, just, peaceful, culturally rich, resilient, and flourishing futures.
Here, I translate Education for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals, UNESCO’s wider educational frameworks, and systems thinking into clear questions, research-informed tools, and practical ways of looking under the hood of teaching.
Music learning and teaching are my primary areas of expertise and point of entry into this work. Many of the questions and frameworks, however, can travel across subjects, professions, communities, and forms of learning.
You can expect:
- Short articles and voiceover videos
- Research notes and works in progress
- Systems questions, planning tools, and design frameworks
- Honest discussion of evidence, uncertainty, and limitations
- Opportunities to influence future resources, research, workshops, and professional learning
The community is beginning as a free space. Some future courses, workshops, tools, or other offerings may be free or paid, depending upon interest and what is feasible. Anything optional will always be described clearly.
You do not need to keep up with everything or arrive as an expert. Read quietly, ask a question, share something from your context, or respectfully challenge an idea.
To introduce yourself, choose whichever question feels most natural:
1. Looking ahead: What do you hope education helps learners become capable of understanding, imagining, or doing?
2. Looking around: Where do you already see sustainability, systems thinking, cultural continuity, peace, justice, or flourishing within something you teach or care about?
3. Looking toward this community: What question, conversation, tool, or resource would make this space genuinely useful to you?
A few honest sentences are enough. A question is also a perfectly good place to begin.
