One time, I got up to pee in the middle of a co-writing session. Came back with the idea that broke the whole song open. The video below is a real moment from a coaching call inside the Sync Vault Accelerator featuring @Tom Steele and @Kaleb Blackard , and I wanted to share it here because most of you have never seen what actually happens on these calls. The rant behind it: sometimes the block isn't a lack of talent. It's a lack of faith that the idea will come if you just step away and call on it. Walk away. Trust it. Come back and spit it out. Whether that means scrapping the idea entirely or just making one deliberate choice on arrangement, the answer is almost never "push harder while stuck." This week I watched a member lean hard on a visual EQ tool while trying to fix a mix, and it was actually making things harder, not easier. If you don't know what you're looking at, a scary-looking shape on a screen can convince you something's wrong that isn't. Your trained ears, especially if you've played live or stood next to an amp, are more reliable than a graph. I still tell people: listen quiet, listen on multiple speakers, and trust what you hear before you trust what you see. Reply with the tool you lean on most when mixing, and whether you trust it or fight it.

Gang, please take a few minutes to listen and give feedback on this MIX. It is an unplugged version of one of my old songs. As I'm picking up (many) mixing tips, I am hoping that my mixes are beginning to show improvement or even, dare I say, a bit of polish. I'm happy with the song and the arrangement. What about this mix offends you? What sticks out? What is too bright/dull? I'd love to move beyond tweak stage and master the damn thing. My goal since joining has been to put together at least 20 of my tunes. This is #20. Eventually I WILL have a female singer version. Also, GIVE ME YOUR VOTE: In the instrumental break should I 1.Keep the vibes, 2. record live nylon string/Spanish guitar, 3. Live harmonica (since it's a Stevie Wonder influence) or something else?

An Accelerator member's session crashed mid-write this week and wiped out about half an hour of work. Instead of rebuilding it exactly, they simplified: more space, less crowding, sparser arrangement. Turned out better than the original plan. Constraints force decisions you wouldn't otherwise make.
