THE CINEMATIC MIX INTENSIVE: GUEST REVEALED (WORKSHOP)
The mystery is over. Meet Tim Starnes. Tim Starnes has spent decades as a music editor and mixer on major film scores - credits include The Lord of the Rings trilogy (with composer Howard Shore), The Departed, Hugo, and The Aviator. He's also taught music editing at NYU's graduate film scoring program since 2007. I had the fortune of meeting him in 2021 and he was the stem mixer for 52 songs I produced for Blues Clues/Nickelodeon. He's joining us live for The Cinematic Mix Intensive. I asked Tim what trips up composers who mix their own music. We'll cover: • Gain staging and signal flow • When it's actually an EQ problem, and when it isn't • Why dumping plugins on the master bus doesn't fix what's wrong How it works: 4 cinematic and trailer composers will open their sessions live and get their mix diagnosed by Tim, plugin by plugin. Compression
Have you guys often wondered how compression works, let alone how to use a compressor. Today I came across an interesting post that has a very unique way of explaining compression. I hope this helps and possible gives you all a good laugh I was told this is pretty accurate, but without further ado here it is! Enjoy.

Why Mastery matters for Sync
I sent this video to a few people in the group this week. Robert Greene breaking down his really great book Mastery in 8 minutes. Here's the short version of his 6 steps: - Find your life's task. The thing your specific mix of experience and skill points you toward. - Go through an apprenticeship. Your 20s (or your first years in any new field) should be about learning, not earning. - Find a mentor. Not a hack, but the closest thing to one. Someone who already made the mistakes you're about to make. ✅ [you're already here so you've got it!] - Build social intelligence. You can be technically great and still get passed over because you're hard to work with. - Unlock creativity. Once you've put in the reps, you start making things nobody else could've made. - Fuse intuition with skill. This is mastery. You stop thinking and start feeling what comes next. - I shared it with @David Goode , and he watched it with a buddy of his. Dave's takeaway stuck with me: Once you get honest about who you are and what you're actually good at, that understanding changes what you put into your work. He didn't call it luck. He called it a kind of realization. Here's why this matters for sync specifically: Most people trying to break into sync licensing skip step one. They chase what's trending instead of figuring out what they're actually built to make. That's why they burn out or quit after six months. If you don't know your lane, you can't build a body of work that sounds like you, and sync supervisors are looking for a specific sound, not a generic one.
