The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines levels A1 and A2 as those of a basic user. A1 is the beginner level, covering greetings and very basic needs, while A2 (elementary or survival level) enables learners to manage everyday tasks and short interactions.

B1 – Intermediate: Can deal with most common situations, understand the main points of clear speech and produce connected language on familiar subjects. B2 – Upper Intermediate: Can communicate with relative fluency, understand complex texts and explain or defend a viewpoint.

B2 – Upper Intermediate: Can communicate with relative fluency, understand complex texts and explain or defend a viewpoint. C1 – Advanced: Can use the language fluently, precisely and flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes.

C2 – Proficiency: Can understand virtually everything heard or read and express ideas spontaneously, fluently and precisely, including subtle shades of meaning. C2+ is not an official CEFR level. It can, however, be used as a pedagogical label for work beyond C2, including stylistic refinement, literary language, advanced argumentation, register control and highly complex grammatical structures.
