We often think an anchor has one job:
Keep us still.
Yet life doesn't stay still.
The landscape changes.
Circumstances shift.
Plans change.
We change.
That can make change feel like instability.
Perhaps the problem isn't movement.
Perhaps we've anchored ourselves to things that were never designed to hold us.
When the external landscape changes, an external anchor can loosen with it.
An internal anchor works differently.
It gives us something to return to while everything else is moving.
That doesn't mean we never become disoriented.
A gyroscope can be disturbed.
It can tilt.
It can need to find its orientation again.
The difference is that it is designed to right itself while in motion.
So we don't need a foundation that never develops.
We need a foundation strong enough to support development.
Our knowledge can grow.
Our understanding can deepen.
Our discernment can mature.
Our application can change.
The foundation remains.
We grow from it.
That is sustainable.
Sustainability isn't the absence of change.
It is the capacity to keep growing without losing the foundation that makes growth possible.
So perhaps the question isn't:
“How do I avoid being unsettled by change?”
Perhaps it is:
“What am I anchored to, and can it hold me while I grow?”
