Self-Distribution Starts With Relationships
A medieval period piece shot in a Queens warehouse with no stars and no distributor found its audience — because the team built relationships before they needed them. They knew exactly who their audience was: NYC film crowds, medieval academics, Episcopal congregations. Not broad categories. Specific communities they could actually reach. Every screening came from years of showing up for others. Their distribution partner was a former colleague. Their publicist was a former colleague. Their poster designer was already a friend. They designed a month-long NYC run across theaters where they had real connections — sold-out shows, merch that sold out, Q&As with moderators who brought their own crowds. They treated each screening as an event, not a transaction. Photo ops, polaroids, and limited in-person merch. Word-of-mouth did the rest. You don't need a studio to find your audience. You need to know who they are, build trust before you need it, and treat your community like collaborators. Who are your core audiences, and what relationships are you building now? Drop it below.

Where Will Your Content Live?
Netflix? HBO? YouTube? TikTok? Your own app? In-flight entertainment? A mix? If you're producing your own project, you need to decide this before you write your pitch. Your distribution strategy shapes your budget, your format, your audience, and your profit potential. A solid distribution plan tells investors you understand the business side, not just the creative side. It shows you've thought past "make the thing" to "get the thing seen." And for you? It means no more finishing a project and wondering, now what? So where do you see your content? Drop it below. And if you don't know yet, that's your homework before your next pitch. Planning is everything. Build the plan, then build the project.
Distribution Models (FAST & AVOD) for Indie Filmmakers
Filmmakers, you can license your film to a FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television) or AVOD (Ad-supported Video On Demand) channel. If you are making a film or putting a pitch together for investors, this monetization avenue should be on your list. If your film is at least 30 minutes, it can earn meaningful money. To learn more, check out the Epi 38 of the Kinema podcast with guest Geoff Clark, the CEO of acTVe, CEO of Documentary+, and co-founder of Free Live Sports. acTVe operates as a full-service streaming company that builds and manages FAST channels for brands, studios, and media companies.

Vertical Dramas Just Went Mainstream
Storytellers, I've been talking about vertical dramas for a while — and now Issa Rae just proved the point. She dropped ScreenTime on TikTok and redefined what verticals can be. Different genre, same format, massive success. This isn't a fluke. It's a blueprint. Verticals work across genres, and the barrier to entry is lower than ever. You don't need a studio deal or a massive budget. You need a strong concept, a tight script, and the willingness to execute. I break down exactly how to follow this blueprint in our latest YouTube video — how to make and distribute your own vertical drama on your terms. Ready to build yours? Join the Script & Production Accelerator and create your own vertical drama from concept to distribution.
