Visibility Challenge - Day 5
Thirty years ago, it was more or less expected that you chose a school, trained for a specific profession, and then worked in that same field until retirement. One path, one direction, one identity.
Today, my friends and I were talking about where our children are enrolling — which secondary schools they’re choosing, what they might study afterward, what they’ll do in life, and what kinds of jobs await them. So many questions, so much uncertainty, so many possibilities… and also a fair amount of pressure.
It made me think about my own path.
During high school and university, I worked all kinds of jobs to earn some money — from picking potatoes, selling vegetables at a market stall, doing population and farm censuses, to working in production in various factories (Sava, Iskra, Gorenjske mlekarne), doing office work, milking cows, cleaning rooms, and tutoring. And I’m sure there were more. And then there were all the volunteer jobs as well…
You’d think I studied until I was 30, but I didn’t. At 23, I started working at a primary school — the beginning of my adult life. Even though it was my full-time job, which I covered with great joy across many different areas, I was still interested in so many other things. And even today, my path hasn’t “settled” or narrowed down to just one field — and it probably never will.
Looking back, I’m grateful for every single job I’ve done. I learned something everywhere, gained experience, and met wonderful people. All of this enriches me and gives me a wider understanding of people and of life.
Back then, at the end of primary school, I never imagined that any of these experiences would be connected in any way. Today, I’ve long known that my journey is made up of all these pieces — like a mosaic that only reveals its full picture when you step back.
I’m not afraid of the new. I look forward to new opportunities, new insights, new experiences.Who knows what awaits me — but I know I’ll continue with courage, curiosity, and gratitude. ✨
What guidance, advice, and support am I giving to my children as they step into their own paths?The encouragement to explore, to choose, to change direction, and to allow themselves to discover what truly belongs to them. The answer is never found only in choosing a school — but in helping a child feel themselves, their gifts, and their inner compass.
