Lying
I believe, out of all the addictions that humans have, lying is the single most difficult addiction to give up.
Across almost all esoteric traditions (hermeticism, Gnosticism, Sufism, Fourth Way, and even early Buddhism) lying isn’t just about deceiving others it’s about deceiving yourself.
Gurdjeiff said humans are mostly lying most of the time and they’re doing it mechanically.
We may say one thing with our mouths and something different in our minds.
You’re speaking from a different “I” than the one thinking and that means there is no single “I” in charge.
Humans cannot stop lying because humans do not yet exist as a unified BEing. Different “I’s” speak at different moments and each one sincerely believes its telling the truth.
And the desire to be truthful is often the biggest lie of all.
This weeks work it to stop lying, both internally and externally, for a whole week and then drop your observations in the homework chat.
